gender pay gap

top of the agenda

If we were to compile a list of the top 10 most ridiculous things we could think of, the concept of a gender pay gap would be pretty high up there. So we're on a crusade to take the gender pay gap and make it so small that you can't even see it anymore.

The gender pay gap is the average difference between pay for men and women. UK organisations with over 250 people have had to report their number (shown as a percentage) for a couple of years now. The calculation doesn’t directly compare men and women doing the same job, but it does measure whether both are equally distributed across levels of seniority.

our latest results

Our UK gender pay gap has dropped from 9.8% in 2018 to 6.6% in 2019, which is quite a lot lower than the UK average of 17.3%. A big reason for that is because we now have more women in senior positions. The most noticeable shift has been at our heads of department (Area Chief) level, with 42% of these roles filled by women. Our European figures are even more impressive, with the gap down to just 3.3%. Nicely done.

behind the numbers

So it's good news but we’ve got to keep going. We actively encourage our staff to use our ‘Your Future’ development and career planning tool, and we're always improving how we hire and promote people. This means balanced shortlists, structured interviews and unconscious bias training for all of our managers.

This year, we were really proud to announce equal parental leave in our UK business. We hope this will make us better at balancing workloads and have a positive effect on hiring and promotions, especially in senior roles.

Finally, we know a flexible approach to working is really important to equality and wellbeing. Covid-19 has shown we can still get stuff done when we're all working in different places at different times. We’re learning a lot from this and making positive changes for everyone in the future.
